    PRIVATE SALES OF FIREARMS:  Background checks on person to person "private" sales became 
    effective on March 15, 2013.  Background checks must be done by a licensed dealer.  Dealers may
    charge $10 for the check.

    HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINE BAN STARTS:  Aril 15, 2013.  All magazines over 10 round capacity
    must be destroyed, turned in, or sold out of NYS.  10 round magazines cannot be loaded with more
    than 7 rounds - See note below.

    Note:  The Second Court of Appeals in their October 19, 2015 decision in NYSRPA vs Cumo struck
     down the NYSafe Act limitation of seven rounds that can be loaded into a 10 round magazine.  Use

    AMMO BACKGROUND CHECKS START:  January 15, 2014.  Background checks have been  delayed,
    but all ammo purchases must take place face to face as of January 15, 2014.

    ASSAULT WEAPONS:  Total ban on the sale of military-style rifles classified as "assault weapons,"
    effective January 15.  Current owners of such rifles must register them with the state by 2014, and
    the registration must be renewed every five years.

    ASSAULT WEAPONS RE-CERTIFICATION:  The assualt weapons registration form is now 
    available on-line.  Use the NYS Safe Act Link at the top of this page.

    PISTOL PERMIT RE-CERTIFICATION:  Permits issued prior to January 15, 2013 need to be recertified
    by January 31, 2018.  Permits issued after January 15, 2013 have to recertify   5 years after the issue date.
